Water-Intensive High-Tech Companies Rely on Water Recycling Solutions from DAS EE

Reliable wastewater treatment with optimized water consumption - one of the leading battery manufacturers approached DAS Environmental Expert GmbH with this order. The aim was to effectively reduce the water requirements of the existing exhaust gas purification system by means of intelligent water recycling and thus use scarce resources responsibly.

Water-Intensive Battery Production Requires Intelligent Solutions

The production of batteries and energy storage systems is one of the most water-intensive high technologies. At locations where technological expertise and skilled workers are available but external conditions are challenging, intelligent process solutions are required for successful and environmentally friendly operation. In order to reduce dependency on natural resources at the production site and not burden nature any more than absolutely necessary, more and more companies are consciously opting for resource-saving solutions. Optimized solutions not only help to protect nature and the environment. In view of rising costs, the reuse of water often also contributes to economic efficiency.

Specialists for Intelligent Water Management

When it comes to exhaust gas treatment, the US battery specialist already relies on environmental technology solutions from DAS EE: The exhaust air from a laboratory tool is cleaned using the DAS EE Process exhaust gas cleaning model ESCAPE cleaned up.

"Our good cooperation in the area of exhaust gas purification made it easy for the customer to trust us to optimize the water cycle as well," reports Dr. Valia Sfaelou, Team Lead Innovation, at DAS EE.

The Dresden specialists not only offer a comprehensive portfolio of wastewater treatment methods. They also have a wealth of experience in designing water cycles. After all, intelligent water recycling is one of the most important future topics for their customers in industries such as microelectronics, solar and the chemical industry.

Point-of-Use Particle Filtration and Water Recycling

Challenges of process exhaust gas cleaning

The installed ESCAPE burner scrubber system from the DAS Environmental Expert GmbH removes pollutants from the laboratory exhaust air. The harmful substances are first incinerated and then washed out - which effectively cleans the exhaust air, but shifts some of the pollutants into the scrubbing water. This water must be replaced regularly in order to maintain optimum cleaning performance.

Efficient water filtration system

The composition of the ESCAPE waste water in this application is rather straightforward. Only particles need to be removed in order to return the water to the wastewater system. The process of choice for this is filtration. To do this, the ESCAPE is filtered through a DAS EE water filtration system. Water recycling and waste gas purification can therefore take place directly at the point of use.

Reliable Cleaning without Interrupting the Process

DAS Environmental Experts aim was to keep the design and operation of the system as simple as possible. For this reason, filter cartridges are used. These can be replaced in a few simple steps when they are full. Unlike a filter, backwashing is not necessary. The water filtration system used by DAS EE is equipped with two filter cartridges; one is in operation and one is available as a redundancy. This means that loaded cartridges can be replaced without interrupting the process. The treated water is stored in the associated tank.

Flexible and Automated

Thanks to its modular design and high flexibility, the water recycling solution can be used for very different particle sizes. Reliable wastewater treatment at the customer's site is therefore guaranteed. In terms of sustainability and cost savings, it should also be mentioned that chemicals can also be saved by reusing the water, as less caustic has to be dosed in the abatement process.

"The system works fully automatically and communicates directly with the waste gas treatment system via a bus interface. Our software specialists have developed a suitable ATC (Advanced Tool Coupling) especially for this purpose."

Remote Operation Possible

After the testing and commissioning phase at the DAS EE site in Dresden, the system was transported to the customer. "One last challenge remained: due to the travel restrictions in place at the time, it was not possible to commission the water recycling system at the customer's site as usual. Our experienced team then managed to do this remotely, via a VPN connection. In the end, we had another satisfied customer - which makes our entire team happy," concludes Innovation Manager, Dr. Valia Sfaelou.
